Through the realisation of my own lack of information on the menopause and my engagement and participation with the first online Menopause Cafe, the project ‘u2us’ was born. The aim is bringing single ‘u’s into a community of ‘us,’through encouraging everyone’s involvement in the education and discussions around the stigmatised subject that affects 50% of the population.

One concept is ‘The Menopause Diary.’ This idea was inspired from my own relationship with my Mum and the conversations that began when she started going through the menopause. I made her a diary to journal throughout her experience, so even if she isn’t around when my sister and I are going through it, we can share it together.

I want to encourage others to do the same and send photocopies of extracts to put into a shared publication. The goal is for it to be used to educate others, in a personal way about an emotional subject. But also to build a community where we can support and be supported in eradicating the taboos around menopause.

Alongside this is the Instagram account ‘STOPYOUAREMAKINGMEBLUSH,’ which invites anyone to send in a photo the moment after they go red in the face, with a short description of why.

This is to get people thinking about the menopause from one of the more commonly relatable side effects of hot flushes, and question the ideas of embarrassment associated with ‘going red in the face.’
